I'm not sure why you are not getting a response to your post and I don't have a clue if the price is right. Probably no one has a clue if the price is right because there are more things to consider. Is the DSCV option included in the price? What do you plan to do with the tractor? Are you getting HST or Gear trans? Why would you limit yourself to 2wd? What type of tires are included? If all you want is a small tractor with 2wd, gear trans, and no hydraulics why not get a good Ford 8n for 13 or 14 thousand less?? Another good choice would be a Farmall H. I purchased a JD4100 in June,99. I was certain that I would never want the DSCV option but the dealer refused to sell without it(I ended up getting it at dealer cost). The first option that I purchased for the tractor was the front end loader. It was the only thing that my dealer has been right about but he was right. If you provide a little more information the people on this forum will go out of their way to help you. ....

The DSCV is the Dual Selective Control Valve it is required for the loader.

Like Chris said the DSCV is the valve assembly required if you ever want to add a loader and it may be used for some other third party equipment. I'm not even certain if it is an option or standard on the 4500. It was listed as a $700 option on the 4100, I ended up paying $500 for it. Whether it is an option or standard I strongly suggest you get it for resale purposes if nothing else. Adding the DSCV on at a later date is more expensive and prone to problems according to the dealer I purchased from. ....

Vince, I just checked out the site that Chris suggested. It is a great place to start for prices and the options that you may want and just not know about yet. I compared the price I paid for the 4100 with turf tires, 60" belly deck, HST trans, and DSCV and they were about $1200 higher than I paid. I think I earned the $1200 by way of the one on one, no holds barred dealing I had to do to get that price. ....

Price seems steep. I had a quaote on the 4500 w/ 4x4 and a loader with r4 tires for 21K. A compact w/o 4 wheel drive is like having a 2 wheel drive pickup - great on hard pavement but worthless off road or in inclement weather. The compacts need all the traction they can get, unlike real deal farm tractors where the weight gets yyou all the traction you can handle.

I settled on Orange, the JD's had a 120 - 180 day wait and I was not impressed by all the plastic on the green machine. Also you cannot get the 4500 with an Hydrostatic transmission. The 4600 has the same engine as the 4500, my dealer told me the 4500 was "detuned". ....
